At the end of 1598, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men decided to build a new playhouse for themselves. According to one of the few surviving contemporary accounts of the event, no one was hurt except a man who put out his burning breeches with a bottle of ale. Because the owners were struggling for money, they used the cheapest options in the building process. No-one was harmed when the first Globe burned down. Shakespeare's company erected the storied Globe Theatre circa 1598 in London's Bankside district. There may be further remains beneath Anchor Terrace, but this eighteenth-century terrace is itself listed as an historical building and currently may not be disturbed by archaeologists.[2]. Where was William Shakespeare's Globe Theatre? All rights reserved. At the base of the stage, there was an area called the pit, or yard, where, for a penny, spectators (called "groundlings") would either stand or sit on the ground to watch the performance. Seventeen years later a groundbreaking ceremony was held on a Bankside site near that of the original Globe Theatre. Who built the original globe theatre where did the building materials come from? All negotiations for a new tenancy agreement failed with Giles Allen who had decided to pull the 'Theatre' down and use the materials to build a new property.
